No updates since installing XP Pro SP3

Since installing SP3 onto one of my XP Pro PC I seem unable to receive any
updates, either via automatic updates or by manually updating via IE7 - Tools
- Windows Update.
When I reach the Windows update page and select "Express" I get the usual
message telling me that it's checking for updates.
Then I always receive the comment:
"Download size (total): 0 KB"
"Estimated time at your connection speed: 0 minutes"
"No high-priority updates for your computer are available"
If I check the update history I can see my last update was:
Windows Update Agent 7.2.6001.788 - 14 November 2008 - via Automatic Updates
I know there are some significant updates since this date, especially this
week, yet I seem unable to receive them
I have a very fast professional Internet connection so no problems there,
and I'm heavily protected with up-to-date antivirus software and hardware
firewalls.
I've tried the procedure to manually register wups2.dll but this didn't work.
Clearly this PC, and several others behaving similarly are now rather
vulnerable, so I would be very grateful for some suggestions on how to
rectify the situation.

Do another manual check at WU. When/if nothing happens, close IE.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log and post back with the *last* 50 or so lines
of it, please: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

The above entry shows that 6 updates were detected as being needed by
the system. That's the very end of the WU.log ?

Somethin' ain't right as no updates were detected previously in the log.
It is conceivable that the updates have already been downloaded and are
awaiting installation ... hence the "Download size (total): 0 KB" seen
on WU.

When SP3 was applied was the antivirus/security suite actively
monitoring the system[s] ?


If not, what is the firewall being used by all of the systems and, are
they on a wireless or wired network ?

Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

Yes I agree it's very weird, but to be honest I've now got to the stage
where I just need a way out of the problem.
This PC has some serious programs installed and I really want to avoid a
Windows re-installation.

To answer your questions:
Yes that was the very last 60 lines of the log which I sent.
I can send you earlier entries if you wish, but nothing after this.
Kaspersky A/V is installed but was disabled during the service pack
installation.
I also subsequently re-installed SP3 a couple of days ago, but this didn't
change anything and the problem persists.
However the Windows firewall was set to on (recommended) during SP3
installation.
And the PC is wired 100mbps Ethernet and has no wireless capability.
I really hope you have a magic answer to rekindle WU

Had you just done a clean install of Windows?

What WinXP version was the machine running before you installed SP3 (e.g.,
WinXP SP1)?

If you uninstall WinXP SP3 via Add/Remove Programs and make sure Automatic
Updates is enabled, are any updates offered?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed WinXP SP3?

OK, let's find out if updates were downloaded to the system.
Show hidden files, folders, and system files:

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

There should be randomly named folders present. If there are, open one
and then open it's update subfolder. There will be a .cat file present
with the KB number of the update present.
IF there are no randomly named subfolders present than the system never
downloaded any updates.

The issue may possibly be that .dll files of the Windows Update Agent
were not registered properly or, that some components of it did not
downloaded due to the hardware firewall.
