updates not happening

I run Windows update and things are not shown that I know I have not
installed. Like the latest release for today. it doesn't show in Windows
update, or history. I can download it from the download section, but when I
try to run it, it tells me that I am trying to install the wrong version. I
downloaded the x86 version which matches this older computer.

I looked back and Windows Update has been installing updates for office but
nothing operating system related for a couple of months.

Something weird is going on...

I have XP SP3.
