Windows Update Running Amok

I have two computers, each running Windows XP for the past four or five
years. During that time. I've religiously used Windows Update to install
all suggested updates of Windows thru SP-3 and Office 2003.

Suddenly, on both computers, Windows Update reports forty or fifty important
updates, going back to Windows SP 1.

I restarted and the number shrank, but still seems to include a few dozen
oldies.

What on earth is going on?
