ActiveX Control
One of my customer's is using Windows XP SP3.

When we visit update.microsoft.com it gives instructions about installing an
ActiveX control. The toolbar referenced in the message never appears and
there is no error message.

We have installed other ActiveX controls on that machine (like Adobe Acrobat
Reader 9.0 download) and been prompted in the standard way using that same
referenced toolbar.

What is the solution to correct this "feature" that will allow us to install
the control for update.microsoft.com?

.... Thom

RE: ActiveX Control
Hello Thom,

Try this:

Search for and delete all files "*.tmp"
Search for all files "temp" Delete the contents of them, do NOT delete the
folder.
Go to Control Panel
Click Internet Options
Click "Delete Cookies", click OK, may take a few minutes
Click "Delete Files"
Check "Delete all offline content" click OK, may take a few minutes
Click "Clear History" click Yes, may also take a few minutes
Perform Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"

Go ahead and download Dial-ª-Fix.

Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download Dial-ª-fix
Click the Double green checkmark and click Go.

Reboot

No joy, then

See if running this tool resolves the error: This apply to XP too.

AU Check (v78a)

Download and *save* it. After the download completes close all open
programs and browsers.

*** Temporarily disable the installed antivirus/security
suite/anti-malware/3rd party softwares. This includes all services nd
processes associated with them. Either consult the User Guide or the
manufacturer's web site to learn how this is accomplished.
You can use the following steps to Clean Boot Vista if the above task is
too complicated: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean
boot in Windows Vista
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135>

*Enable* the native Vista firewall as the system must be connected to
the net when the tool runs so that it can downloaded needed updating
software components. ***

Now run au_check_v78a_codeplex.exe by *right* clicking it and choosing
'Run as administrator'. Allow it time to complete it's operation.
Restart the computer afterwards.

See if the system can update now.

This will give you a starting point for your troubleshooting anyway.

Please let us know if the problem remains

Re: ActiveX Control
1. Was WinXP reinstalled before SP3 was installed?

2. Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
