delete downloaded but uninstalled updates

I use XPpro and have update set to alert me when new updates are available
but not download them. However I recently hit download by mistake and now
have sp3 and ie7 downloaded and waiting to be installed. I do not want to
install them at this time so can I delete the downloads? If so, where do I
find them?

When the update icon appears in the Notification area click it.
Uncheck the boxes next to SP3 and IE7, click OK.
Put a check in the box that says to hide these updates, click OK.
They're now hidden.

To unhide them, open the Automatic Updates applet in the Control Panel
and click the " Offer updates again that I've previously hidden " link
at the bottom of the window.

I understand that but I have actually downloaded them to my pc and when I
power down it wants me to install and I have to select power off without
installing. Where are they on my hard drive? I am assuming I can delete
them.

IF AU is set to " Notify ... " then you *should* be prompted to install
them prior to shutting down. You can delete them by first stopping the
AU service and BITS, too, if it's set to Automatic on startup.
Start > Run > type in and then click OK or press Enter after each command

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:

Use Windows Explorer and navigate to
WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete all of the contents of Download
Close Windows Explorer
Back to Start > Run

net start wuauserv
net start bits

That will remove the downloads. You may still be prompted to install
them but ... they are no longer present and will be redownloaded IF you
approve them. If prompted to redownload them, just Hide them when notified.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect IE7 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

advanced security than IE6):

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
