Vista hangs on reboot after applying updates

Vista applied 3 automatic updates and hung up configuring 3 of 3. After
sitting for 24 hours, I pulled battery and tried rebooting in Safe Mode. It
seemed to finish the update and rebooted. Now it's hung up mid-boot with the
Windows Vista logo on the black screen.
How the heck do you get past this?

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message [configuring
updates stage 3 of 3. 0% complete], and the computer restarts when you try
to install an update in Windows Vista:
