I was having similar problems. I don't know exactly where in this
sequence of steps the update gods finally smiled upon me, but here's
what I did and what ultimately worked:
Install normally (w/Auto Install, this was causing my PC to reboot
every night for about two weeks until I got tired of this and tried to
figure out what was up!)
This always failed (even though the installer seemed to think it was
ok)
Tried manual download and install -- again, no luck.
Booted into Safe mode -- log in as Administrator -- Run manual KB patch
(Install says success ... but)
Reboot
Log in as myself -- Update Shield immediately reappears :-(.
Reboot - into Safe Mode -- Log in as Administrator
Tried the install again, a couple of times (I'm not sure exactly when,
but at some point, I could tell the installer wasn't doing anything).
Checked in Add/Remove programs -- sure enough, KB958644 now shows up as
installed.
Reboot -- into normal mode
Finally, success!
I'd suggest: Try boot to Safe mode -- Run the update/manual KB patch --
Then, reboot back into Safe mode (this may allow the re-boot sequence
complete, where it might not have, when I rebooted immediately back to
my own user ID -- even though I grant myself Administrator permissions).
Good luck!
