Can't Update: Error 0x800704DD
This started off pretty badly; at first, I could actually download updates,
but it would give me a Failed message everytime it tried installing the
downloaded updates. So I did a lot of funky things.

I re-registered the Windows Update DLLs.
I re-installed Service Pack 3.
I re-re-registered the Windows Update DLLs.
I re-installed Windows Update Agent.
I re-re-re-registered the Windows Update DLLs.

AND NOW, SUDDENLY! I can't get into Windows Update at all. When I click on
Express or on Custom, it starts scanning, and then immediatly gives me the
0x800704DD error. This is particularily bothersome and I would like your
advice on how to fix this.

Re: Can't Update: Error 0x800704DD
Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install
updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web
site, or from a WSUS server: "0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
