Windows update in Vista...

I am running vista home with zonealarm as my firewall. About a couple of
weeks ago, I noticed the windows update icon in the bottom right hand corner
saying it is downloading updates. Well, it stays at 0% and does nothing.
When I open it up through the control panel, i have to use task manager to
close it out. I have reinstalled zone alarm since then and it was not a
problem before. Any ideas?

If you remove Zone Alarm completely, enable the built-in firewall and
reboot - then try your updates... Does it work?
