Hanging installing windows update

I am trying to get my wifes computer which is running XP to download and
install the windows updates. Finally got the computer to connect to the
update site, the site got to the part where it says it needs to update the
updater(?) so I clicked on "Download and Install Now" and a window pops up
and says "installing updates". Then nothing. No progress at all. What do I
need to do?

As I was sitting here it completed and said the updates failed. Am I
missing something?
