SP3 and logon/off problem

This seems to have started after the XP SP3 install. Is it a known
problem?

On a laptop, user logon is impossible. A few seconds after clicking on
the user name, the saving settings message appears, and then we're
logged out again. This happens in Safe Mode as well as normal mode.
There's just one active user account, but in Safe Mode it happens for
Administrator too. Help, please!
