MS Update-ALL Updates Fail

SBS2003,Win XP SP2;newly re-installed;TrendMicro CSM; Microsoft Update;
Downloads and verifies all updates but ALL installations fail. No reason
given. I can't turn this PC over to a user with 114 critical updates missing.

I tried re-registering the AutomaticUpdates .DLL (several times) and
restarted the service (several times). Nothing worked.

Until I broke the job up into about six (6) batches. No batch exceeded 22
updates and each batch required a re-boot for some strange reason. At any
rate, I finally got all 119 updates installed.

Curious that NONE of them required downloading. It wasn't a download issue
at all but for some reason, the number of installs per batch WAS an issue.
Just what that critical number was, I've no idea.

Tip: Install WinXP SP3 first to avoid having to install about 100 of those
114 critical updates!

1. Download & save to your desktop:

2. Read & heed:

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3*. Follow all prompts, be patient, and reboot twice.

4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):

5. Go to Windows Update | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.

Thanks "Bear".

I really don't want SP3 nor do I want IE7. We use FireFOX for most browsing
and it's just fine. I downloaded an SP3 CD from TechNet when it first became
available and tried it but uninstalled it.

I just wish MSUpdate had given me some clue as to the reason ALL the
installs failed. There was no reason, no error code, nada.

If you don't wanna install SP3, don't.

Doing the above should allow all of those security updates to install. I
can assure you that your WindowsUpdate.log will list at least one error
relating to the failures (e.g., 0x80080008; 0x80004002; 0x8024D007), all of
which are resolved by the above.

Please note:

1. There's free installation and compatibility support from MS forSP3...but
only until April 2009.

2. After April 2010, SP3 must be installed in order to be offered any
further security updates for WinXP.

So you might wanna rethink not installing SP3, especially since (a) you'll
be saving a helluva lot of memory if you don't install those 100 or so
post-SP2/pre-SP3 updates and (b) you'll have to install SP3 eventually
anyway.
