Update failures

I have not been able to do any updates in my vista home premium since
12/2007. The os was purchased on machine. If I need to reinstall os will I
lose all my software installations? I don't have a cd only a recovery
application on the computer. It is a Toshiba Satellite

Which version of Vista do you have? If you have another machine, you can
transfer your application data to it and restore it later. As far as I know,
you can burn DVDs for recovery with the repair program on Toshiba Satellite.
Check the user guide PDF on your machine and there you will see the system
restoration instructions.

If you use the destructive recovery - yes, you'll lose anything that you
have installed since you purchased the system.
The recovery will put you back to the day you purchased the machine.
See the user guide which should be on your system.
