Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

Is Windows Update offering the machine KB842773 or are you attempting to
install it manually? If the latter, why?

One doesn't see a 0x80070003 error in the log you posted.

Winxp SP1 home

This is the error I get from Windows Update. I go to the website and have it
search for updates and when it tries to install them, that is the error I get.

Re: Unable to update Error Code: 0x80070003
You won't be able to install anything via Windows Update or Automatic
Updates until you've got WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3 installed. Lucky for you,
I've got instructions handy:

1. Download & save to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip SP2 entirely if you're running WinXP SP1.]

2. Read & heed:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron...tallation.aspx

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts, be patient, and reboot twice.

4. Now do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

5. Go to Windows Update | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Addtional References:

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Denied" and then uninstalls its self.

Re: Unable to update Error Code: 0x80070003
First, make sure that your anti virus software isn't locking the registry
and preventing the installer from modifying the same.

Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Access is
denied" or "Service Pack installation did not complete"

Re: Unable to update Error Code: 0x80070003
I have unistalled Norton antivirus to make sure it was not the problem.

Then I tried the first step, installing subinad and running the reset
command, then retried to install xpsp3. I still got the same failure " Access
denied". I then tried to reset the security settings to the defaults and I
got this error "secedit is not a recognized program or batch file".

What do you suggest next?

Re: Unable to update Error Code: 0x80070003
Try this:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/re...in-windows-xp/

If still no joy:

1. Open a free SP3 support incident; or

2. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum. Do not attempt to install WinXP SP3 until an
expert's given your log a clean bill of health. (Don't be surprised if
you're advised to format & reinstall Windows.)

Checking for/Help with Hijackware
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm
http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...moving_Malware

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0, or other
appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.
