Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool won't install

Every time I turn my computer off it says I have updates to automatically
install but it then shuts down without installing the update.. Tried to
manually install and keep getting -

failed installation

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

NB: Ignore the titles, if necessary; also applies to Upgrade installs, and
