Windows Server Won't Update: Error : 0x80190191

I have a windows server running windows server2003 and it will not update. I
get the Error number: 0x80190191 each time I try. There have not been any
updates run on this server in over a year now and it is a Domain Controller.
Any suggestions?

You may be requiring authentication on your firewall or proxy.
0x80190191 translates to "The requested resource requires user
authentication. "

Do other machines on this network have this problem?

0x80190191 BG_E_HTTP_ERROR_401
HTTP status 401: The requested resource requires user authentication.


What is the state of the BITS service ? Open the services console and,
if the service is not started but is set to Manual for Startup type, see
if you can start it.
If it it started, see if you can stop and restart it.

Why did you wait so long to seek assistance with this issue ?

What is the installed security software/antivirus and which firewall
and/or proxy server is being used ?

The only MSKB that cites 0x80190191 is for XP and it refers to BITS:

Your connection path is probably the cause. E.g. is a proxy involved?
Something like that is probably intercepting your request and returning
an HTTP 401 response.

Also, it looks as if you might be able to get a more specific clue by actually
seeing that response instead of just a sign of it.
