It doesn't. You're not going to believe this.... While waiting for an 800MHz
machine to slog through Black Tuesday, DX9 crashed trying to view a small
tutorial WMV. That crash window hid the failure of Winupdate, which was for
the infamous "WMP9-encoder-which-we-don't-have security update," below. My hex
fail code was a new one, which is why I didn't catch the threads at first.
My bad for running something during Winupdate. I'll wait for MS's fix with
the rest of humanity.
I've changed the title on this message, so the next fool won't get caught out.
Tidbit for the team: did you know that a Celeron 466 with XPSP2, 384MB, now
takes 5:30 to calculate that it needs two updates? Ask me how I know.
