Reintalling windows updates
Hi there to every one,
I am having some problems with my windows XP sp2 system, but before solving
it my self I want to discuss it with others.

Scenario:
I am experiencing frequent explorer crashes to which Dr. Watson generates an
error report and sends it over the internet, but the link it provides for
more information doesn’t help. Interestingly it shows an error reporting
complete dialog box when there is no internet connection available.
Add Remove Programs window takes a long time to display the installed
programs and does not include my peach tree accounting software. With this
previously it was showing a long gap between top listed programs and rest of
the installed programs, so I had to scroll down through all over the Big
Blank Space to see the rest. ( This all meant only for completion.)

So now I am planning for a clean install, but before continuing I want to
uninstall all of my software including any hot fixes and updates installed by
AU to further diagnose the problem.

Question:

1) Does uninstalling OR removing hot fix/updates also remove its downloaded
files from local computer or those will be available to install on local
computer later?

2) This is similar to the above but for a clean install that:
I have moved “download” folder in “c:\windows\software distribution” to
another drive( after updates were installed), then after a clean install, Can
I use it again by simply copying it to its original location and AU will
install any updates and hotfixes from there? Or all the updates need to be
downloaded again from the internet.

thanks inadvance for any kind of help about this.

Best Regards

1) No. The updates are cycled off of the system after a set period of
time. After a format and reinstallation, there will be no updates on the
local computer.

2) Not quite sure what you mean here. If you copied the randomly named
subfolders of Download right after they installed, then you can use them
again. If you did not do that expeditiously, usually within 7 - 10 days,
then the randomly named subfolders are cycled off of the system.

IF you have the XP SP2 CD, then all you have to do after installing it
is to apply SP3. After that, automatic updates should present the
updates that were not included in SP3.

After formatting and installing XP SP2, ensure that the native XP
firewall is Enabled, do NOT install an antivirus program just yet,
download the entire SP3 package from here, and *save* it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Create a folder on the root drive [ the drive where Windows is installed
to, usually C:\ ] and name it SP3. Move
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to SP3.
Click Start > Run > click the Browse button
Click the My Computer icon in the left frame
Click the icon next to LOCAL DISK (C [if that's where SP3 is]
Click on SP3
Click Open
Click on WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to highlight it
Click Open
Click OK

After SP3 installs, install the AV of your choice.
Clear ?
