Update for Windows media encoder 9 (kb954156)

Get error code ox8007F0F4 will not install. I have win xp sp3

I have the same problem and get the same error code. HELP! Peter

"8007F0F4 - STATUS_PREREQUISITE_FAILED"

This issue is being looked into by MS. You may not have the Encoder 9
installed (hence the error code) or it may have been removed or you have an
old version. You are being offered the update because of a particular
registry entry which may have been left over from a previous
installation/removal etc.

Hopefully there will be a resolution soon.

What's the current version pre this update?

Hi Alias,

It appears as though for WinXP X86 "2003", for Win XP X64 "2006"

I've been unable to find anything more recent.

The detection logic checks this subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media\Encoder

If 'Encoder' exists, the update is offered whether Media Encoder 9 is
installed or had been installed and subsequently uninstalled.

If Windows Media Encoder 9 is *not* listed in Add/Remove Programs in the
Control Panel, then one can install it from the MS Download Center and
then apply the update or, edit the reg subkey by deleting 'Encoder'.
That *should* stop the reoffering of KB954156.

so do I on like 20 computers running xp sp3
only one it installed because it had the Encoder 9 in add/remove programs
the others did not have it

Maybe MS needs to pull it and fix it and not let it show for those who do
not have the Encoder 9 installed?
