Windows update problem

It seems I need to completely reinstall Windows Update from scratch.
due to apparently missing bits of various files. Is there a method of
obtaining the main Windows Update program?
Can anyone advise of the process??

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation
