Windows updates

I just rebuilt a computer due to hard drive and motherboard failure and I'm
trying to get the updates installed. The downloads install, but they do not
install. I have been reading all the posts for this problem, have tried all
of them going back through 8/25 and still can't get them to install.
HELP!!!!!

I don't have any antivirus or spyware programs on this computer.

Forgot. Windows XP Pro SP2.

Usually method 1 is sufficient - see -

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

Make sure you install your anti virus software ASAP/if not sooner.

Okay, now check the windows update log for further clues.
Start, Run, type: windowsupdate.log
Post the last part about what updates are failing to install etc into this
post so it can be reviewed by either me or others here with their opinions.
In other words, we're interested in the error messages etc.

Interestingly enough, I got tired of trying to figure this out. When I had
originally rebuilt the computer, I used the HP restore CD's and couldn't get
the updates to work. I re-installed the OS using a regular installation CD,
installed the device drivers manually, then was able to download the updates
with no problems. I had used the restore CD's twice and couldn't get the
downloads to wor, then used a regular install CD and it worked.
Coincidence....?

Always start your own thread in future -

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this
folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.


You'll lose your history but not important.
