vista sp1 wont install

i have a new dell laptop running vista - as soon as i unpacked and connected
to the net it asks to intall the sp1, it does its thing - re starts three
times and moves through the 1, 2, and 3 steps but then says" it failed to
install and the system is undoing the changes.

i have downloaded sp1 from the web site and installed - no joy, i have used
auto updater - no joy, i have installed from ms site - still nothing - what
is happening>

Are there any error messages etc?

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista
["When you try to install an update from Windows Update on a computer that
is running Windows Vista, you may receive the following message:

configuring updates stage 3 of 3. 0% complete

After you receive this message, the computer reverts to the screen that
displays the same message. Additionally, the update is not installed
successfully, and the computer restarts."]
