Windows Update Failing (Code:80070490)
I have tried numerous times to install this update...and it's one that says
it's important...but it fails every time. And the update icon will not leave
my taskbar because it hasn't installed the update. I tried to troubleshoot
it...and still get the same thing happening. Anyone have a solution?

Thanks!

What update?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; WinXP SP3).

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Re: Windows Update Failing (Code:80070490)
Oh sorry thought I had it there.
I'm running Windows Vista
With Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor E2140
1024 MB Memory
250GB Hard Drive
Update for Windows Vista (KB951072)
Also have Nortons Internet Security 2008

Hope this helps! It's all I could find!

If you temporarily disable Norton AntiVirus *and* disable the Norton
Firewall *and then* enable the Windows Firewall, will the update install?

Can you download & install it manually? => Download the installer from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...7-9686983976FD,
SAVE it to your desktop, do not RUN it | Right-click on the saved file | Run
as Administrator | OK.

Are you sure this is the only update that's failing or has failed to
install?

=> Look in:

• Start | Settings | Control Panel | Programs and Features |
Installed Updates; or

• Windows Update | View update history

==========================

Are you sure you're not running Vista SP1?

Do you use a "Registry cleaner"?

Is your Norton Internet Security subscription current?

Are you having *any* other problems with this machine (e.g., redirected
Searches or webpages; "Page cannot be displayed" errors; cannot manually
update Norton AntiVirus)?

Read what MS Support suggested for another sufferer (didn't help this poster
though):
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...635d514dcc0770

Unfortunately, every other poster here who's run into this error ended up
having to do an "inplace upgrade" (reinstall) of Vista to resolve the
problem.

FWIW, I would NOT be running a Norton application on a Vista machine or any
other machine.

Yes thank you. The manual download worked.

I'd bet $10 that Norton was the cause of the problem.
