Problem when adding a replica server to WSUS environment
I have an issue with a WSUS replica server that I am having problems to
understand.

Background: We have a WSUS 3.0 SP1 installation running on Windows 2003 SP2
with the database running on a separate SQL 2005 server and we wish to move
the WSUS installation (not the database) to another server (virtual VM).

After reading various articles it sounded fairly straight forward with
version 3.0:

-Install WSUS on the new server as a replica.
-Synchronize all content and settings.
-Redirect GPO setting for clients to the new server.

Have I missed something?

The problem: After installing the second server as a replica it appears that
the first server has become a replica instead (???) when looking in the
Update Services console.

If I connect to the newly installed server with the console and change the
configuration in “update source and proxy server” it changes the setting for
both servers as if this was a global setting, am I doing something wrong?

If I connect to the “old” server it sees itself as an upstream server in the
“downstream servers” option in the MMC. If I connect to the newly installed
server it sees the “old” server as a replica and itself as the “upstream
server”, does it make any sense?

I’m sorry if it’s not very clear but I find it confusing and difficult to
describe the problem.
