Cannot install Windows updates

I had to reinstall Win XP Pro as a repair process using Promise Fastrak raid
controller drivers.
Win XP works fine now, except I cannot install updates.
I get to the point where I have selected updates but installs are not done.
I get error message:
"Something on your computer is preventing installation of updates." But
no clue as to what it is.
