Windows XP SP3 troubles

Clean install of XP, then updated with SP3
After SP3 install, all subsequent updates will download but not install.
I now have Windows 'reminding' me to install about 15 updates, but wont let
it happen.
Am I going to have to wipe and reload Windows then NOT install SP3?
I can see that I am not the only one with this problem.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows
Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you
repair a Windows XP installation
