Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Hello Members, i hope someone has the answer.

I'm having a major issue trying to get this update to install, somethings
very wrong, i've already read another thread regarding this update, but as
yet no one has the answer.

The computer again is a Dell Inspiron 1720, Intel graphics chipset, 160gig
HD, with 2gig of ram, the Windows Vista SP1 was offered for install a month
ago, and i accepted it.

The system does not have windows defender on it, or running as far as i can
tell in the systray, and i only use Windows live Mail as my email client, the
firewall is handled by McAfee Security center(same as the other members
threads).

I have tried to install the update from a downloaded version, with the same
error, so now i'm hoping a forum member might have the solution, or who to
contact about the issue.

Your help would be very grateful.

Kind regards

Let us know what hªppens.

Check back later, though. I'm sure someone who knows about this will be
passing through any time now.

I hope this post is helpful.

Windows Defender is included in Vista by default.

Were all components of McAfee Security Center running in the background when
Vista SP1 was installed?

Have you been able to successfully install any other Windows Updates since
Vista SP1 was installed a month ago?

80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND
Corrupted System File; Need to perform an in-place upgrade or reinstall of
the OS.

Re: Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Hello and thanks to all the replies, i haven't had the chance to try either
doing the update with McAfee off, or following the other links, as i'm away
from my computer for a few days, so i hope i may bring this post alive again
when i give it a go.

What i can say is when i first noticed this problem originally there were 2
window vista updates needed, they were both downloaded, and the install
process began, one was successfully installed, but the one above was not, and
hasn't been ever since.

I haven't been offered further updates, so i can't tell if any others would
download, and install at the moment regardless of this one.

As far as the Service Pack 1 installation was concerned, "yes" i did leave
McAfee, and anything else running in the systray at the time, i didn't think
to turn them off at the time, but also saying this, there were no prompts
from the apps during the SP1 install.

What i can say is, i didn't have any other apps running, either during the
SP1 install, or when i did the vista updates, like IE7 or Windows Live Mail.

What does worry me though is the comment regarding having to install the OS
again, i hope there may be a way to repair it, like the SFC type tool or
something.

Theres just one last comment i would like to mention, and that is the
computer runs like a dream, there doesn't appear to be any other issues, no
other problems have shown themselves.

So if i may ask for your patients, as soon as i get the chance to try the
advise given to me, i'll report straight back.

Kind regards
Livio

Re: Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Hello Members, thanks for hanging on, i've just tried installing the update
with all the McAfee Security Center componets turned off, and the
installation 'Failed', this also occured through the usual Vista Windows
Update process, with McAfee off.

But to answer the question related to whether i could download, and install
any other updates through Windows update, there were 2 others today (Time
8:40pm uk), and they whent through no problems, so can i prosume Vista
Windows update service is ok?, and that it's related to something else?

What is the next step?, should i contact Dell or Microsoft, or just ignore
it and hope it corrects itself one day over future updating.

I have looked over the web relating to this problem, and there seems to be
alot of issues regarding this particular update, someone metioned something
regarding when they had to restore to a previous registry version, this was
for someother reason, and found it then installed.

If anyone has a solution, i'd be greatful to know of it, i'm also going to
go through the Microsoft free support service, see they have an answer.

But as i've said previously, the computer runs great, so, if the solution
seemed risky, a re-installation say, i don't think i'd do it.

kind regards

Re: Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Thanks PA Bear, i've done just that, so now i have a Vista windows support
reference, thanks for all yours, and eveyone elses help.

I think it may end up being one of those, leave it to repair itself
situations, one day suddenly it's gone events, through some other computer
system change maybe.

I only use Windows Live mail, and not the Outlook Express replacement
Windows Mail, so i guessing this update is related to this email client, as i
don't have MS Office Outlook installed.

Thanks again, i'll update this post if MS have a working solution that
doesn't involve re-installing the OS, which i don't think i'd do

Re: Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Hello Members, just to give a further update, i went through the free
Microsoft Support service with no success.

The two suggestions were from them are below....

Please try the steps given below to resolve your issue.

SUGGESTION 1:
We have found that, this issue may occur, if any 'Third Party Software' is
conflicting with the Windows Update Site. If you have 'Norton', 'McAfee' or
any other Antivirus or firewall software installed on your system, the 'Third
Party Software' can conflict with the Windows Update Site, hence I would
request you to kindly disable these software, while accessing the site, this
should resolve the issue for you. Please remember to enable the 'Windows
Firewall' on your internet connection (if it is not already) before going
online in case of virus problems.

If the issue persists, let's go to the second suggestion.

SUGGESTION 2:

Rename Software Distribution folder:

1. Click on 'Start', in 'Search', type in CMD and right click on 'Command
Prompt' and click on 'Run as Administrator'.
2. Type NET STOP WUAUSERV and press 'Enter'. (Leave this window open for
later use)
3. Open 'My Computer'.
4. Find the folder c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
5. Right mouse click on SoftwareDistribution and choose 'Rename', call the
folder "SDold"
6. Return to the black Window that opened in step 1 type NET START WUAUSERV
and click 'Enter'.
7. Close all the windows.

Once we have performed the above steps, please access the Windows Update
site and check, if the issue is resolved.

If the issue still persists, please provide me with the following
information, so that the issue could be resolved more effectively

Which i then did........, and received the response below.......

Thank you for your response and providing the valuable information.
I appreciate the time you have invested in following my steps. I am sorry to
know that, they did not resolve the issue.

Run the System File Checker tool

To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or
more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker
tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect
versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box.
2.Right-click cmd in the Programs list and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type
your password or click Continue.

3.At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

After the scan is completed it will give you information about the corrupted
files in the system. If there are corrupted files then please do the
following.

Your best option here for this particular issue would be to contact the main
Microsoft helpline: 0870 6010 100 (Hours of operation: Monday - Friday 8:00
AM - 6:00 PM).
And ask for Microsoft Windows VISTA Support, and I am sure they would be in
a much better position to help you with your issue.

So i did the sfc process, but still the KB905866 failed.

So i guess, i will have two wait for it to rectify itself

Kind regards

RE: Update KB905866 failed, error code 80070490
Hello Members
Just an update to my problem with trying to get my computer to install the
KB9055866 update with success, well, i came across this item and followed the
last part regarding the 'Readiness tool/update', link below....

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/...-kb905866.aspx

And the actual Microsoft download link for the 'Readiness tool/update' is
below

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

I then ran the install, when it finished i closed the window as instructed
(i did not restart the computer), went straight to 'Windows Update' did a
'check for updates', there was only the KB905866 ready to install, followed
the usual procedure with success.

Hope this info helps others.

Kind regards
