Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
NB: If Windows Update offers SP2, you could skip straight to a manual
install of SP3 and avoid installing SP2 and the nearly 100 post-SP2 updates.
After doing so, however, you'd still have to do one or both of the
Resolution Methods in KB943144 before you'll be able to install any post-SP3
updates (and there are several).
