Don, you forgot to supply the error codes, but you did supply the KB article numbers.

Try this (ignore the title) - Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation

When I try to shut down, I keep getting the message that new stuff is
there to be installed. It keeps saying this over and over again even
though I shut down saying install.

What I have been trying to download are:
Security Update for Microsoft Word 2002 (KB954463)
Security Update for Microsoft Office XP (KB921596)

I get Error Code 0x80070641

I have tried to clear old stuff and try again as well as one microsoft
link but nothing is working.

I have limited, if any technical expertise, so keep it simple, if
possible.
