Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
[X-post to Windows Update newsgroup]

Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?

What does WindowsUpdate.log have to say about the failure to install?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Compare errors to those listed here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1122
and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support
link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

================================

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB950759).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE,
call the above number and ask to be transferred to the Consumer IE7 queue
(which is 47830).

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
0x8007F0F1 is the key error but you've gotta answer some more questions
before we can make sense of it here.

Repost:
> Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?

Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually? Had you
reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Were any of these applications running when you installed SP3?

Were any other updates offered besides KB950759? If so, did they install
successfully?

Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
---> I, too, am having this problem. The last error in the log is
0x80070005; however, the WU website shows 0x8DDD0007.

---> From the end of the log:

***
2008-06-11 22:14:31:890 1220 64c Report REPORT EVENT:
{F1E8DA62-4B30-45B6-9C16-0D269642E225} 2008-06-11
22:14:26:890-0500 1 182 101 {B4D318F7-B6A2-4470-A051-1D20600AAD80} 106 80070005 WindowsUpdate Failure Content
Install Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update
with error 0x80070005: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for
Windows XP (KB950759).
***

Virus protection was turned off during install; I use a hardware firewall.

---> What I've tried:
1 -- I tried using the AU Reset tool from Sheenan Stanley
(http://www.microsoft.com/communities...7-5c28fd2b974e).
After running his tool, I went back to the WU website & went through the DL
& installation of 950759 again. It asked me to reboot, which I did. After
reboot, the yellow shield is still in the systray

2 -- Tried following the troubleshooting steps offered on the WU website.

3 -- I have tried calling the PCSAFETY number for different WU issues in the
past (different computer), and the person's thick accent coupled w/ the
excessive background noise made it impossible to understand the tech.

---> I think this is the part of the log where it begins the 950759 update...

Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
Hello, here are the answers.

? Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?
Long before.

? Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?
Manually.

? Had you reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?
No.

Some things I've since found:

From KB950759-IE7.log:
"AnalyzeForBranching: files installed on target workstation are from sp3bta branch which is incompatible with sp2gdr branch"

From website:
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-031 - Critical
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (950759)
Published: June 10, 2008 Updated: June 11, 2008
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS08-031.mspx

Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-071310D9464A

I'm confused. It says for SP3, but the installer fails because of SP3. So if files are incompatible why is the update offered?

Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
(Redone with missing answers)

Hello, here are the answers.

? Was IE7 installed before or after WinXP SP3 was installed?
Long before.

? Did you install Win XP SP3 via Windows Update or manually?
Manually.

? Had you reinstalled WinXP (SP2) just before you installed SP3?
No.

? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?
Just ZoneAlarm Suite, which I shutdown.

? Were any other updates offered besides KB950759?
Yes.

? If so, did they install successfully?
Yes.

Some things I've since found:

From KB950759-IE7.log:
"AnalyzeForBranching: files installed on target workstation are from sp3bta branch which is incompatible with sp2gdr branch"

From website:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3

I'm confused. It says for SP3, but the installer fails because of SP3. So if files are incompatible why is the update offered?

Re: Security Update for IE7 WinXP KB950759 fails to install
This problem is the same one as I have just experienced. I have XP Pro with
SP3 on a desktop and a notebook. The OS was installed on both of them from a
slipstreamed XP/SP3 CD. They both have AVG 8 Free version installed. No
others. XP Firewall.
The notebook installed the same update plus five more in the same batch
without any problems on the 11th June. I didn't make any changes to AVG.
They both had IE7 installed a few days ago, that is, later than the OS.

The desktop also downloaded (from Update) the same six updates on the same
day and started to install them. But, after the message "Initializing
Installation" appeared, nothing else happened, except for the HDD buzzing
away!

I left it running for about five hours while doing other things, and then
shut down the computer. It duly came up with the shutting down message, and
then the message "updates being installed 1....6...." or similar. Then I gave
it some more time and as the message remained unchanged, I switched off.

So why the diference?

Tony

Uninstall WinXP SP3 Beta/Release Candidate via Add/Remove Programs, then
install WinXP SP3 RTM via Windows Update.
