Try the Windows 2K newsgroup as this NG, Windows Update, deals with
issues with updating:

Windows 2000 General

Good luck.

Re: Free anti-virus?
Hi there,

Not really a windows update isssue really, but here you go:

Any virus program is affective, however keep in mind: first the disease
comes and after that a cureis found.

Best is to install and use a virus program and scan online with another
virus program: two see more than one

AVG is free and good to use: http://free.avg.com/ww.download

Beste regrards,
Michel Denie

Agreed, one program is insufficient, and some AV programs
are better than others, for virus, trojan and rootkit
detection.
A lot depends on whether you live dangerously, if you
buy your software, and don't P2P it from doubtful
sources, you are less likely to get infected. If you
visit sites to view people doing the most amazing
things to each other, in many cases inventing
novel uses for common everyday objects, you
also need a good hardware firewall. Then use
ShieldsUp until you get "Congratulations, you
PC does not appear to exist on the Internet"
No response to pings, no unnecessary open
ports, your BIOS can't be seen.
