Windows xp pro express update never completes checking

Dear Person,
I need some one to help me on my MS XP pro, I am uptodate because Automatic
updates is turned on. I noticed that no updates are showing in my
notification bar. So I decided to run update manually. I selected express,
after maybe two hours the express cheking was still going on. How cam I
correct this problem. I installed SP3, but I believe this existed before the
SP3.

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
