WindowsXP SP3
Hello:
I recently formatted my hard drive due to misc. problems. I was able to go
online for Windows Updates though very slow using dial-up. I downloaded SP3
the other night. 22 min download took hours. After computer restart, I am
unable to get online. Actually, MSN sign-on screen says unable to connect-try
later. But bottom corner of sign-on screen says I'm connected and my phone
has data noise. Unable to get any further with MSN, though I can get online
thru IE. What gives? I did System Restore to point from April. Still having
problems. MSN Internet tech no help. HELP!

RE: WindowsXP SP3
Yes. I did not disable my anti-virus software, though. The SP3 download,
though it took hours, said it was complete and that I needed to restart my
computer. However, it did not restart after I selected that option. I had to
start it up myself. Now that I have done the System Restore, SP3 is not
listed in my programs. I have run an anti-virus and anti-spyware scan and
everything looks clean. FYI- my MSN Internet program is not listed in my
programs either. I have a copy of MSN 9.5 coming by mail. Do you think that
will fix my problem?

RE: WindowsXP SP3
I had problems with SP3 when I installed it the first time because I just
installed it like the majority of folk would, result was a few minor
irritations but mainly my internet connection wasn't quiet right. It worked
though.

I then installed SP3 the right way, and everything is running perfectly.
It was a little test I did to see if it made a difference. Prior to testing,
I had imaged my drive so that it made it easier to revert back to a good
working system. It was well worth the experiment.

As for MSN, wait and see when you receive the delivery in the mail.

RE: WindowsXP SP3
You need SP2 minimum as you won't get any updates otherwise.

Eventually you will need SP3 but you can take a little time in preparation.
You will eventually be able to get the full SP3 package on CD from MS which
you can keep in case you ever need it later or wish to slipstream the SP3
with your original WinXP disk.

Re: WindowsXP SP3
Hi, check this kb article out - ignore the title, SP3 may have mucked up the WU Agent
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Re: WindowsXP SP3
Well, that explains a lot! But now what I don't understand is that since I
did a System Restore to a date before the SP3 download, and since SP3 does
not appear on my list of programs, why am I still having trouble getting
online with my MSN sign on page? The sign on page says I'm connected, I hear
data rush on my phone, but there is a window over my sign on page that says I
am unable to get connected! I can minimize the sign on page and get online
thru my internet explorer, but it seems like getting in thru the backdoor. I
am still waiting for the MSN 9.5 cd to come by mail. I am hoping that will
make a difference. But now that I know that there can be a problem with
Windows Update downloads due to the fact that I reformatted/repaired my
WindowsXP installation, I am a bit concerned about future updates, including
the automatic updates. I will try to follow the resolution instructions
listed on that link you sent, but I am concerned about opening a can of
worms. It's for my mom's computer, and I'm tempted to give her mine and buy a
new one for myself. But then I've heard the bugs aren't out of Vista yet!
Thanks much for your help!
Linda
