ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
I have been rabidly looking for solutions to this all day, to no avail. My
automatic updates for windows randomly will not work anymore today.
Here is what I have tried:
- turning automatic updates on from the security center
((will not turn on))
- trying to get updat0x8DDD0018es directly from microsoft site
((gives me the 0x8DDD0018 OR 0x80070422 error))
- running "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll", "regsvr32 qmgr.dll" "regsvr32
qmgrprxy.dll", then doing Start > Run and type in regedit, browsing to the
key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv]
and looking for a "DeleteFlag"
((was no such deleteflag entry for me))
- running "regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll" and then making sure "Automatics
updates service", "Background Intelligent Transfer Service", "Event Log" and
"Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator" are automatic and started.
((usually, everything but the automatic updates starts just fine. Somtimes
automatic updates lets me make it automatic, but when I try to start it,
gives me the error "1058" and won't start. Most of the time I try and set it
to automatic, it just goes right back to being disabled.
So does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix this??
Thanks,
Julie

RE: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
When that site says run "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall 132 %systemroot%\inf\au.inf" from the command promt, does it
mean to run it all as one command? Also, I do not have the windows
installation CD, so is there any other way of reinstalling automatic updates
without it, or any other way around this problem?
Thank you for the help though,
Julie

Re: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
Can you try this simple solution:
1) Reboot the system in safe mode (to do this, you have to restart your
system and keep pressing F8 function key)
2) On the black screen you get, use your arrow keys to go to the first
item called SAFE MODE
3) You may be prompted to confirm whether this is what you want. Click OK.
4) Now launch your Windows Explorer
5) Go to: C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution [or copy it and paste it in
your address bar ]
6) Delete everything there is in this folder because it will all be
created again when you start your system normally.
7) Now restart your system normally as you have done everyday thus far.
8) Go windows update site
<http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us>
Hope this helps.

Re: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
I did all what you said to do and yet I still cannot enable automatic updates
and I went to that website and it still tells me I cannot download updates
because of the same error.
Thank you for your advice, but nothing seems to work! Any more suggestions?

Re: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
Reinstall AU -
You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614
Reboot then reinstall the WU Agent - (ignore the title)
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation

Re: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
Julie,
Try Phase I here: Windows and Microsoft Update Problem Solver
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=33560
After rebooting the system, visit Windows Update.
If no joy, go here and install the latest Version of the Windows Update
Agent using the steps laid out:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1172
Reboot afterwards and try WU once more.

Re: ERROR 0x8DDD0018 is driving me MAD
Rob,
Please see my post to Julie. There has been a noticeable increase in the
0x8DDD0018 error code posts with some posts including Error 1058.
It very well may be that these systems have been infected by a malware
known as Vundo.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/po...=Win32%2fVundo
After cleaning Vundo one then has to reset the
AU service and reinstall the Windows Update Agent [client].
Suggest you scan the system for the presence of Vundo. If the Windows
Malicious Software Tool is not installed nor scanned the system
recently, then suggest you first utilize it and see if it detects and
removes Vundo. Definitions for Vundo have been included in it since
March '08.
