Windows update error 80244016
Running Windows Vista Business and can't run Windows update from the
Microsoft site, I get the error 80244016

I've re-built the PC from scratch after formatting the HDD and I still get
the same error.

This PC is able to update from WSUS OK.

Other XP PCs with the same proxy and in the same OU can run Windows Update
from the Web OK.

Searches of the Web advise running "proxycfg -d " but as this is Vista is
doesn't have "proxycfg"

I don't suppose that error means anything sensible to anyone or that there's
a fix for it ?

Thanks

Peter Lawton

Re: Windows update error 80244016
0x80244016 - SUS_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_BAD_REQUEST
Http status 400 - invalid syntax

For Vista , the website has been replaced by Windows Update in Control Panel. If you want
to check for updates manually, follow these steps:
1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then
clicking Windows Update.

2. In the left pane, click Check for updates.

Re: Windows update error 80244016
What I am doing is this:-

Open "Windows Update" in control panel

Select "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update" in the right pane
(as this machine is set up for WSUS clicking "Check for updates" in the left
pane will check WSUS, not online)

In the right hand pane I then get a red cross and a message "Windows could
not search for new updates" and the informative "Error(s) found code
80244016"

How do I fix this ?

Thanks

This is an HTTP '400' error...HTTP/1.1 Error 400 - Bad Request

Oh.. but look... you've already received this answer once!

One then simply needs to translate the error for your own scenario:

> (as this machine is set up for WSUS clicking "Check for updates" in the
> left pane will check WSUS, not online)

So, you click on "Check for updates", and you get an HTTP '400' error,
suggesting one possibility as a misconfigured URL for your WSUS Server.

Download and run the Client Diagnostic Tool on this machine, and post the
results.

The CDT is available at:

This machine can update from WSUS perfectly well, what it can't do is update
from Microsoft Update, over the Internet, using the built in Vista "Windows
Update" control panel

See Lawrence's reply anyway. [He's the WSUS expert but I don't think a
machine can "check for updates" either way, Peter.]

Re: Windows update error 80244016
This is not a WSUS problem, these are the important bits from my previous
posts that explain what my problem actually is:-

1) Running Windows Vista Business and can't run Windows update from the
Microsoft site, I get the error 80244016

2) This PC is able to update from WSUS OK.

3) Other XP PCs with the same proxy and in the same OU can run Windows
Update
from the Web OK.

4) What I am doing is this:-

Open "Windows Update" in control panel

Select "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update" in the right pane
(as this machine is set up for WSUS clicking "Check for updates" in the left
pane will check WSUS, not online)

In the right hand pane I then get a red cross and a message "Windows could
not search for new updates" and the informative "Error(s) found code
80244016"

As this PC can connect to the Internet fine for web browsing etc and the
issue is just with Windows Update does anyone know where I should start
looking to find a way troubleshoot further.

What I did forget to say though is that this is an x64 Vista box, so the MS
WSUS client diagnostic tool won't run on it, this is what I get running it
several x64 Vista machines, not just the one I'm having issue with.

WSUS Client Diagnostics Tool

Checking Machine State
Checking for admin rights to run tool . . . . . . . . . PASS
Automatic Updates Service is running. . . . . . . . . . PASS
Background Intelligent Transfer Service is running. . . PASS

GetFileVersion(szEngineDir,&subversion) failed with hr=0x80070002

The system cannot find the file specified.

Re: Windows update error 80244016
Nobody seems to be reading my posts unfortunately, this is not a WSUS issue
at all, WSUS is working fine.

I'm sitting at another Vista machine in another domain at the moment. This
machine is also set to use WSUS but this machine can also update directly
from MS, by selecting the "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update"
in the right pane of the Windows Update control panel. This is what the PC
I'm having problems with can't do and it gives the error 80244016
