Hold off on SP3 for the mowment, Mario. Download Automated cleanup tool
to remove the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...30/611355.aspx
Run it and have it remove .NET 2.0
If a message appears saying that it can not be removed, leave the tool
open and reboot.
When the system comes up, check in Add/Remove Programs to see if .NET
Framework 2.0 is listed.
As stated by Aaron:
> If you run the cleanup tool, you will need to perform a repair or reinstall for all other versions of
> the .NET Framework that are on your computer to get them to work correctly afterwards.
I've run the tool and removed .NET Frameworks but have yet to encounter
a situation where other versions had to be repaired or reinstalled.
YMMV. If you find that .NET 1 or 1.1 have encountered this situation,
then try a Repair or Remove from ARP {Add/Remove Programs) FIRST, before
employing the cleanup tool to remove them.
Then manually download, save, and install .NET Framework 2 -
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Do the same with .NET Framework 2 SP1.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
IF you *have* to repair/remove .NET 1 and 1.1, *remember* to UNinstall
the updates for them *first*.
Manually download, save, and reinstall them from the MS Download Center:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/S...displaylang=en
Enter the .NET Framework desired into the Search field and then click
Search. At the bottom of each .NET Framework download page there are
*usually* links to the updates and SPs for them.
After the .NET Frameworks have been restored to a working order, then
read this prior to obtaining XP SP3, please:
Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
Hi Mowgreen,
Ok, I used the tool and got a message saying that it could not be reomved.
So, I left the program open and rebooted. When the computer rebooted, I want
to add/remove programs and .net 2.0 was not there(Yea). So, I attempted to
install (from your link) and it failed. It says, The following error
occurred during setup:
"Windows installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support
personnel to verify that the windows installer service is properly
registered. For more information, visit the following site:" Here is the
link;
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/8291
Should I re-use the framework registration tool?
Thanks again,
Mario

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
NO. First, check in Add/Remove Programs to see if Windows Installer 3.1
(KB893803) is listed.
Click on Start > Run > type in or copy&paste the below into the Open:
line and then click OK or press Enter
services.msc
Scroll to the bottom in the right frame and look for Windows Installer
Under ' Startup Type', what does it say for Windows Installer ?
If it is set to Disabled, double left click on Windows Installer and set
the Startup type to ' Manual '.
Click Apply, OK.
Just to the left of the list of Services, under 'Windows Installer',
click the link that says ' Start the service '
Did it start ?
If it did not, close the Services console.
Please see this:
Error message when you try to add or remove a program on a computer that
is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: "The Windows Installer
service could not be accessed"

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
Ok, I checked under add/remove programs, windows installer (KB893803) is
listed.
I went to run and searched for services.msc. Scrolled through the list and
did not see a windows installer file.
I looked at the link you listed. It had 2 options, registering or
reinstalling windows installer. I did neither, I wasn't sure, so I chose to
be safe.
Please let me know what to do next.
Thanks again.

When the Service console was open you could not find Windows Installer
under Name ? It's NOT a file, it's a Service, and they are listed in
alphabetical order.
If it's not listed than something is definitely amiss.

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
I pulled up the services window like you said. There is no windows
installer service listed. There is a InstallDriver Table Manager, but NO
windows installer.
As a side note, Adobe downloaded an update and when it tried io install, it
said there was no windows installer or windows installer could not be
accessed.
And yes, it seems that something is amiss. HELP!

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
Try the steps here, Mario: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353
Suggest you *first try Step 6*. That will rule out a Permissions issue
in the registry.
*REMEMBER* to read this FIRST:
How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756
If that does not restore Windows Installer to the services list, then go
back and start with Step 1 through 5.
If doing the above still does not restore Windows Installer to the
services console you will have to do a Repair Installation:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341
Please see this also if that is the only avenue left:

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
Ok, I have tried step 6 and then steps 1-5. It still does nto work.
Now I have problems opening Quickbooks also.
Now, first of all, I am nervous about doing the repair/reinstallation of
Windows XP.
When I do the repair/reinstallation, will I lose everything on my computer?
What I mean is, am I basically reformatting the entire computer? Will I
lose all files and programs? I am going to start backing everything up to an
external hard drive today. Please give me an idea of what I should expect.
Thanks for ALL of your help.

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
Hi MowGreen,
I seemed to have fixed the problem. Faced with the daunting task of
repairing or reinstalling winows XP, I went back through your posts.
First, I went to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951950
It had a link to Windows Installer Cache inssues.
So I clicked on the link and it took me to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917283
I clicked on the first link under the known issues.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...8-de776fd4138c
After that was done, I went and installed the .NET Framework 2.0 and the
..NET Framework 2.0 SP1. After it finished, I rebooted the computer and
everything seems ok. I am now able to open Adobe & Quickbooks.
Do you think there is anything else I should check?
And, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, very much for helping me with this.

Re: microsoft .net framework 2.0 fails to install
You rock, Mario. Nice work !!!
You're mowst welcome. Am very glad to hear this issue is resolved.
It sounds as if everything related to .NET is now fixed ... the only
suggestion I can offer is that if you are going to run disk or registry
cleaners again, DON'T DO IT !!!
If one does not understand the implications of doing so and/or one can
not accomplish those tasks manually, then using an automated method is
akin to giving a loaded gun to a child.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951950 specifically points to running
such 'cleaners' as being THE cause of the installaion failure of .NET
2.0 SP1.
Believe me, there are plenty of other installation issues also related
to indiscriminate use of such 'cleanup' tools.
