Upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro, now updates fail
I am the system admin who just received a brand new Dell Optiplex 755 - it
came with WinXP Home. SOP is for us to upgrade to XP Pro (we have a volume
license that lets us do this legally).

The upgrade went fine. I was even able to install the Microsoft Update
utility (replacing the Windows update).

However, now when I run MS Update (it tells me there are 95 critical and 10
optional), it fails on all of them saying

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from
being downloaded or installed

That is now my question - can someone help me get this machine to run the
updates like it should?

I ran the http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/dia...displayLang=en
as instructed, where it passed all of the diagnotistics. I then ran the
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , where it gave me the following
output:

Chris,

Any Google/Newsgroup searches for your problem before asking? I only ask
because this newsgroup is over-flowing with the following answer ( I know -
I have posted it many times myself... ;-) ):

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)

Do all suggested methods. Hope that helps!

Assuming I know whom this is - yes - this is who you think it is. ;-)

Yes, I did a google search before asking here (actually, google lead me
HERE). I have seen that kb before, but like a moron, didn't bookmark it.

I'll run through those things and rsvp back with how well it worked.

Yes, I *think* I know you... from TAMU?
