.NET 2.0 SP 1 Corrupting .NET 2.0 Framework
We are seeing a lot of our customers call in because our applications won't
start and the problem is that the .NET 2.0 Framework is corrupt.

When you go to Add/Remove programs and try to do a repair of the framework
it gives you an error and it can't repair. You end up having to use the
..NET Clean Up tool. We aren't the only company having this issue.
QuickBooks just sent out a notice yesterday to all of their customers for
the same issue,
http://support.quickbooks.intuit.com...rticle/1009275.

It appears to be happening because parts of the .NET 2.0 framework are in
use so the setup fails and this in turn corrupts the framework and make it
unusable. We are seeing stuff like this in the event log:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MsiInstaller

Product: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1. The file
c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\CORP erfMonExt.dll is being
held in use by the following process Name: tmasea , Id 3580.

Error Source: Windows Update Agent
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806).

The in use files error messages are from a computer at our offices and he
did a Shutdown and Install Update, and he still got this problem. It looks
like the TrendMicro servicers were still running and in turn locked the
files from update.

I was wondering if this issue is being looked at? If an update fails to
install it should not cause this corruption. I thought the beauty of an MSI
was that it would roll back any changes if it failed. Well it appears this
isn't working. This is causing a bunch of tech calls to our company and in
turn costing us lots of money in support.

Thanks,

Eric Renken

RE: .NET 2.0 SP 1 Corrupting .NET 2.0 Framework
Thanks for taking the time to post your knowledge. I had spent two hours
working on trying to get this resolved as far as getting the .NET2 to install
corectly - without success following other advice in this group. When I saw
your message and you mentioned Quickbooks I realized that was also happening
to me. The quickbooks link worked and had me back in operation in 10 minutes.
