Vista update problem

My PC with Vista was working OK until the weekend when it downloaded a number
of updates including servixce pack 1 for vista. Since then it keeps saying it
has encountered an error and closes down without warning. Can anyone advise a
solution short of re-installing vista and starting ahagin from scratch?
