Computer freezes when trying to access windows update

I recently reformatted my computer to its original factory state. I have
Windows XP Home SP2. When I run windows update it will analyze and tell me to
download updates. When I try to download it says it's downloading but it just
hangs forever. Any suggestions?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
