My PC keeps freezing if I enable windows updates.

I have a problem with my home computer; I decided to reformat the hard drive
on my home computer (running Windows XP SP2). As I hadn’t done, in a couple
of years. All went fine; I reinstalled the drivers for all the hardware. AVG
antivirus, Zone alarm, add ware and spybot. But now if I enable windows
updates the whole machine completely freezes up. None of the keyboard
commands work, and the only way that I can shut down the computer is with the
power button. I then have to start up in safe mode to disable Windows
update. Then restart the computer as normal, there is no log in the event
viewer. I have checked all the hardware drivers, fitted a new HDD and SATA
cable, I have also reinstalled windows with another copy of home edition,
still the same problems. Has anybody else had this problem with windows
update after a reinstall?

Might be related - When you use Automatic Updates to scan for updates or to apply updates
to applications that use Windows Installer, you experience issues that involve the
Svchost.exe process

I will give it a try, I'll let you know what the outcome is. Thank you for
