Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
On two laptops, since downloading and installing the April updates, Windows
XP will not start in either. Upon powering on, they both go through the
boot-up process and Windows XP begins to start. During the Windows XP
start-up, it fails, and returns to the boot-up process. This cycle runs
continuously but never gets to the Windows XP login screen. I've tried
options to run in Safe Mode, with and without in network, as well as last
configuration when Windows worked. Because I cannot get to the login screen,
I cannot even get to a restore point. Also, I have already submitted a
request to Microsoft but after 24 hours have not received a reply. PA Bear
seems really helpful. Hopefully, he knows how to fix this problem.

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
Hi there,

The rebooting cycle sounds like a faulty driver issue, try booting into safe
mode and right click my computer, under system properties choose the tab
adavanced and under startup and recovery unmark the checkbox restart (nder
system faillure, click ok and close the active window

Reboot in normal mode if all goes well a blue screen of death should appear,
write down the error code in the blue screen and report this here, we might
be able to give some assistance.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

RE: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
It is definately NOT a driver problem or a boot problem. The latest windows
update had a script error or at least that what my computer told me BUT not
before I downloaded & installed the update. It prompted me to start up in
Safe Mode but when I would try, all I got was line after line of some kind of
script. So, I had to reformat my computer losing everything on it. After
reformatting my computer is STILL screwed up & I have programs just popping
up & starting on their own. I am p*ssed to say the least. Just wanted to
let you know that even after reformatting there are still some serious issues
with my computer. I am very disappointed in Microsoft after this. Be sure &
tell you computer tech about the problems before & after reformatting.

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
Hello,

Not having made any backups and losing data is your own choice so you cannot
blame Microsoft for this.

I am truly sorry but without any sufficient error reporting it is kind of
hard to help someone out.

Best regards,
Michel Denie

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
I had 90% of my files backed up & what I did loose was really no big deal.
And as far as "blame" when using any machine you can expect glitches & such
but when a trusted cooperation such as Microsoft causes so many computers to
screw up after this last update it hard not to blame them. I have cruised the
internet today looking for others who have had this misfortune & it,s clearly
obvious that there was something in that update that shouldn't have been. I
have my computer up & running but it isn't right by any means.

"... when a trusted cooperation such as
Microsoft causes so many computers to screw up after this last
update ..."

Which specific update(s) downloaded/installed by what method and what do you
mean by 'causes so many computers to screw up'?

(Please qualify/quantify your statements with specifics and facts - for if
it is so - I would like to know before getting into the same situation
myself and prevent other customers from having the same issue. I ask this
only because you seemed to have jumped into another conversation to expose
your problem, but have provided little to no details at this point.)

I've updated several hundred computers with April 2008 updates (through
April 2008), ranging from pentium III desktops to less than a week old
desktops and laptops... I have not personally witnessed any trouble related
to updates on any of these computers. However - if you have - I would like
to know more about it...

What you describe seems to be more of a infection/infestation of some sort -
either of the computer or the network it is on or both perhaps. The action
you took seems to be one of an extreme measure - perhaps unnecessary -
although since there is no way to go back and try something else - one can
never be sure.

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
Thanks for the suggestion but neither laptop will boot into any mode, Safe or
otherwise, and continues to cycle between boot-up and the Windows start-up.
I have tried selecting the Safe Mode but, as mentioned by another respondent,
get a screen full of code for several seconds and then the cycling process
resumes. I do not get an "error" message because Windows never actually
opens up.

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
Another clue to continue the search for a solution was that the updates were
conducted in different geographical areas. The first laptop was updated from
my home in the United States utilizing the Automatic Updates schedule while
the second laptop from done from Qatar by accessing the Windows Update
website. I thought I wanted the most up-to-date software especially when
abroad. I watched the download and installation process of the laptop in
Qatar and noticed nothing out of the ordinary when prompted to reboot the
computer. After clicking on "reboot" my laptop has never made it past the
previously described problems.

Re: Windows XP will not start after installing April updates
Everytime i ATTEMPT to update Windows Vista (at prompting) during April, it
knocks me off my ability to connect with internet. So far, have had to
restore system back to April 9th date to even be able to get online. Am
concerned about missing needed updates (security, etc.) but am SICK TO DEATH
of having to go thru the restore stuff everyday!! I have tried every
file/tab/hit-this, hit-that, 2 Excedrin every 4th hour, I care to ever do.
Any suggestions out there? The belief of M. Denie that it is just that other
guys having done things wrong to get himself in this situation, is sorely
wrong. APPARENTLY a whole bunch of us are dealing with this aggrevation!
