updates not installing

hello i have vista and my updates are not downloading or installing..when i
try to download the updates it will just sit at 0 percent and when i shut
down the computer while installing updates the blue screen will say it is
installing updates, but it will stay in that screen for hours.. i need help
because i cannot log into my networks internet at school without updating my
computer
