windows could not search for new updates

Code 8024D00E. I got my new Gateway computer back in December, 2007. At the time, I wasn't aware of any problem, since I had told windows update to download update, and ask for my permission to install them. Recently, while looking at update history, I noticed that my computer has not been updated since I purchased it. Anytime I go to windows update and click on check for updates, I immediately get this message and error code, as though my computer didn't even try looking for updates. I tried uninstalling my firewall (Comodo) through the control panel's add/remove programs. Same problem. I contacted gateway, who told me that this was a microsoft problem. My version of Vista is Vista Home ultimate.
Does anyone have any ideas?
