update not working after clean vista install

Pleeease Help!!

just did a new clean install of vista business version and trying to do the
first windows update...

Its says i must first install new windows update software, goes to a
'downloading and installing updates' progress bar but it fails and says
'windows could not search for new updates' and displays error code 80073712
