Updates failing
Microsoft says I need some updates. I try to downloand and install but it's
not working. The download works but not the install. The updates are KB945185,
KB946254, KB944941, KB943983 and KB943973. This has been going on for over a
week. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Tim

What exactly happens? Do the install fail with an error message? Are
you using Windows Update to install? To be able to help we need a
little more information.

Re: Updates failing
Yes, I'm using Microsoft Update. It checks for the latest updates, then the
Express Results shows a High Priority update for XP, the Security Update for
Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB936181), and 5 updates for
Microsoft 2003, KB944941, KB943973, KB943983, KB945185, KB946254. I click on
Install Updates and it indicates that the updates are being installed. Then
the XML Core Services update is successful and all the others fail. I get a
message that reads Some Updates Were Not Installed, and then it lists t 5
that failed.

Well, there could be several reasons for this. I have had two problems
like that on Vista. MS support was not able to help, but I found this
method:
Do two things over all:
First:
1. Bring up an elevated (Administrator) command prompt
2. Execute the following commands sequentially:
a. fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\
b. cd /d %windir%\system32\config\txr
c. attrib -r -s -h *
d. del *
Second:
Start an elevated (Administrator) cmd.exe
Type: Cd %windir%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine
Type: Attrib –a –h –s *.TM*
Type: Del *.TM*
NOW REBOOT! After reboot updates should install

Re: Updates failing
Windows version?
Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

suggestions mentioned have helped.

RE: Updates failing
For what it's worth, after I fail to install the 90 updates there is no
record of any failed attempts in the review update history.

I don't believe the thread/conversation you replied to has anything to do
with your issue.
Did you search any?
First off - the original poster has Windows Vista. You have Windows XP. ;-)
See if this fixes your issues - come back - let us know.
Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
Do all suggested methods.
