Thank you for your solution .. it looks a bit easier than having to
uninstall ALL of the Microsoft .NET Framework applications (1, 2, 3 and
now 3.5). My problem is first I obviously am having my problem long
after your solution .. it is Feb 09 and I have FINALLY after 3 months
gotten my Windows Update to work again after 3 months ago having it
download into my Windows XP SP2 computer ... the SP3 update. Lo and
behold freezing and horrible problems ... all something I really did not
have that much choice in doing. It came in thru Automatic Updates and
it froze and stopped my computer. 3 months later after uninstalling the
IE 8 version I had at the time of the SP3 update (something that I saw
no warning on) and just this week updating my IE7 rollback version to
the NEW IE8 latest install that works with SP3 .... after updating that
and then manually installing .NET Framework 3 and 3.5 ...... lo and
behold my Windows Update started to work. After also installing
computer memory and increasing my DSL speed and so many many more
attempts to re-register files ... delete Software Distribution folders
.. etc.
Okay so today I made sure my Windows Update was working and it was and
I now have so much "stuff" from all of my versions of .NET Framework on
my computer and here I never thought I was even using that program.
Here I am a bit afraid to fool with it but yours is the first post that
indicates to me that we don't need to have all of the versions .. just
perhaps the latest. Which is now 3.5 isn't it. My question is because
today when I downloaded an optional update via Windows update ... which
was the Silverlight (KB957938) update ... I got the error code of 0x66A.
Hesitant to uninstall my latest "fix" to Windows Update .. which seemed
to me to BE the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5
Family Update (KB951847) x86 ...........
perhaps I should just let this error be and not update my Microsoft
Silverlight.
So I suppose my main question is now ... can we delete all of the
versions of .NET Framework prior to 3 and 3.5 and still have this latest
version work?
Sorry for the long post and question but it is much more important than
me just getting Silverlight to work .. it is a matter of trying to hold
onto my 1 day final fix of Windows Update after 3 months of it not
working!
