Stubborn error 0x80072F78

I have tried for a long time all the suggestions from this forum, specially
the oft quoted http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941, but this solves
nothing for me. I have the impression that this has to do with the proxy, but
I am quite sure that IE and proxycfg proxy config is right, also Windows
Updates websites are in the trusted area, only thing I think this could be is
because proxy *requires* user&pwd authentication and maybe WU does not work
in this circumstance.

Anyway, I'm trying once again to find how to solve this. Any ideas?

Please attempt a manual visit to Windows Update either via the link on
the Start Menu in XP or the Windows Update 'thing' in Control Panel in
Vista. When access fails, open the WindowsUpdate.log by going to
Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter
[For Vista I think you can just type in windowsupdate.log into the
Search box; not sure about that though]

The WU.log will now open
Scroll down to the bottom
Copy and paste the *last* 50 or so lines of the log into your reply, please.

I'm not entirely clear on whether your system is using a proxy or not,
is it ?

MowGreen, it is mandatory here to access the Internet through a
proxy-firewall, there is no other way to have outside access. I have
configured dozens of new PCs to use it, so I positively have to be sure. The
proxy config can be made through either an autoconfig script (http://
intranet.mycompany.com/auto.pac - this sets up a 3-proxy chain) or a manual
config (proxy.mycompany.com:80, not used for local addresses).

If I access the failed file
"http://www.update.microsoft.com/v7/windowsupdate/redir/wuredir.cab" directly
form IE, it downloads without trouble. My intuition tells me that it works
because IE has already validated user+pwd with the proxy-firewall at the
application start, but WU, using proxycfg, can't. But I don't know how to
work around it.

It may help to know which proxy server you use.
E.g. at least if it is ISA the most relevant article would be

I don't know if WUv7 changes this requirement or simplifies its implementation.

BTW you could try inserting Fiddler2 between your client and your proxy
to understand your problem symptoms better. Although Fiddler2 is also
a proxy it can be chained to another proxy.
