XP SP2 doesn't respond after updates

I bought a used laptop and it was working fine when I got it. But after
downloading and installing about 90 updates, it pretty much quit responding
to mouse clicks. All I get is the hourglass when I click on something,
including 'shut down computer'. I end up doing a ctrl+alt+del to shut it
down. Does anyone have any ideas?
