Dear MowGreen,
Thanks for your reply - I appreciate very much the effort you have put into
dealing with my problem. I'm sorry to have taken so long in replying, but I
have been backing up my C: drive, restoring old backups and restoring to the
earliest possible system restore point that I could find (14th December), but
to no avail. The problem is still present.
I will copy your post and add my responses to your questions.
** MowGreen:
Are *any* updates for MSXML 3 showing in Add/Remove Programs in Control
Panel ?
** Roger: YES - there are three, but they appear to be for version 4.0:
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672) Size 2.71MB
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) Size 2.77MB
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181) Size 2.77MB
** MowGreen:
It appears that the issue is directly related to MSXML 3 not being
present/or not functioning due to any number of factors.
Let's see if we can get the latest version of the MSXML 3 parser installed.
Download and SAVE *msxml3.msi* from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Close all programs and browsers.
Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp
Go to Start > Run > type in the below into the Open: line
cmd
Click OK or press Enter
At the prompt, type in the below *pressing Enter* after each command
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /u msxml3.dll
exit
** Roger: Did the above and here is a copy of the screen:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\acer>net stop wuauserv
The Automatic Updates service is stopping.
The Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\acer>regsvr32 /u msxml3.dll
Note: I got a return code 0x80004005 after attempting to unregister
msxml3.dll.
** MowGreen:
Whether the command to unregister the msxml3.dll is successful or not, at
this point in time the Automatic Update service is now stopped.
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\system32
Delete msxml3.dll by moving it to the Recycle Bin for now
Navigate to
WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
Delete the copy of msxml3.dll by moving it to the Recycle Bin for now
Close Windows Explorer
*Right* click the copy of msxml3.msi downloaded previously and choose Install.
Restart the system after the installation finishes.
Now try to access Windows Update. If access fails, please post the last 30
to 40 lines of the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory
[folder] and tell us which Antivirus/security software is installed ?
** Roger:
Did the above and went to "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/" by clicking
on Internet Explorer's "Tools/Windows Update", but I got nothing displayed -
just a blank screen, with "Done" in the status bar at the bottom.
I had a link (saved as a favourite) to this URL:
"http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us" . I
tried that, but got the same error message - "Files required to use Windows
Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer". The last
approx. 16 lines in the log below appear to have been logged after I went to
that site:

I hope the above information above is helpful to you. I am happy to do other
tests under your guidance to try to sort this out.
Many thanks,
