Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or .

I am running a legal Windows XP SP2 on an Acer laptop. As far as I can
remember, I was getting updates until a few months ago, but cannot remember
seeing any recently.

I just went to Windows Update and got this message:

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer".

I click on the recommended "register or reinstall" option and all appears to
work and then I get back to the Welcome to Windows Update page, and get the
same error message again.

This happens for as many times as I click on the "register or reinstall"
botton.

I have searched this forum and have tried many fixes:

1. I have tried running "regsvr32" and re-registering the following .dll's:
wuapi
wups
wuaueng
wucltui
atl
msxml3

All are successfully registered EXCEPT msxml3.dll.

2. I have downloaded and run WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe. It appears to
complete successfully but does not fix the problem.

3. I have downloaded and run WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe. It appears to
complete successfully but it too does not fix the problem.

4. I have tried 2. and 3. above with the /wuforce switch. It does not fix
the problem.

Please can someone suggest another fix to try.

Let's see if we can get the latest version of the MSXML 3 parser
installed. Download and SAVE *msxml3.msi* from here:

Close all programs and browsers.
Show hidden files, folders, and system files:

Go to Start > Run > type in the below into the Open: line

cmd
Click OK or press Enter
At the prompt, type in the below *pressing Enter* after each command

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /u msxml3.dll
exit

Whether the command to unregister the msxml3.dll is successful or not,
at this point in time the Automatic Update service is now stopped.
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to
WINDOWS\system32
Delete msxml3.dll by moving it to the Recycle Bin for now

Navigate to
WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
Delete the copy of msxml3.dll by moving it to the Recycle Bin for now
Close Windows Explorer

*Right* click the copy of msxml3.msi downloaded previously and choose
Install.
Restart the system after the installation finishes.

Now try to access Windows Update. If access fails, please post the last
30 to 40 lines of the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory
[folder] and tell us which Antivirus/security software is installed ?

Thanks for your reply - I appreciate very much the effort you have put into
dealing with my problem. I'm sorry to have taken so long in replying, but I
have been backing up my C: drive, restoring old backups and restoring to the
earliest possible system restore point that I could find (14th December), but
to no avail. The problem is still present.

Did the above and went to "http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/" by clicking
on Internet Explorer's "Tools/Windows Update", but I got nothing displayed -
just a blank screen, with "Done" in the status bar at the bottom.

I had a link (saved as a favourite) to this URL:

tried that, but got the same error message - "Files required to use Windows
Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer". The last

I've just discovered that "System Restore" is now showing a blank screen and
Event Viewer produces the error:

"Microsoft Management Console
MMC cannot open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventvwr.msc."

The file is present.

The above is the most likely cause of ALL the issues, Roger.
The WindowsUpdate.log and the OE error are the same:

0x80040154 REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG

Basically, what's happening is that ZA is preventing the msmxl file from
being successfully installed or registered or both. This error usually
indicates a Permissions issue and, IMO, is directly related to ZA:

0x80070002 ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
The authentication method is not supported. -
CoCreateInstance(IBackgroundCopyManager) fails with E_ACCESSDENIED
(0x80070005) in this condition

And, I was right. 0x80070005 E_ACCESSDENIED
The issue may also be made worse by the installation of
IP Blocker - PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b

Combine that with ZA and it would take a miracle to get this system updated.

What I would recommend at this point in time is to uninstall
PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6b to see if that resolves the issue.
Although I *highly* doubt it will, give it a shot.

As to what settings you need to change in ZA in order for it to allow
updating of required system files ... suggest you contact them :

Frankly, I have no idea of how you'd tweak ZA to allow updating and,
IMNHO, ZA has become more of a threat than malware and is fast
approaching Symantec [Norton] "system-destroying" status.

Hi MowGreen,

I have terminated and uninstalled ZoneAlarm Pro and Peer Guardian 2.
I turned on Windows Firewall.

I still get a blank screen in Internet Explorer when I click on
Tools/Windows Update.

I repeated the instructions you gave me in your previous post:

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /u msxml3.dll
Deleted msxml3.dll from system32 and dllcache
installed msxml3 by right clicking on msxml3.msi and selecting 'install'
restarted system

Windows Update still produces a blank screen in Internet Explorer.
System Restore window is totally blank.

When I go to update.microsoft.com I get the message "Checking if your
computer has the latest version of Windows Update software".
I then got:

"Do you want to install this software?
Name: Windows Update
Publisher: Microsoft .... "

I clicked on 'install' and then got the usual error message "Files required
to use Windows Update are no longer registered...."
I clicked on 'continue' and got the same error message: "Files required..."
I cannot get out of that loop.

As well as the Windows Update problem, I have problems with:

1. Outlook Express (cannot access Hotmail)
2. "Search for files and folders": produces an error "A file that is
required to run search companion cannot be found"
3. The following Adminstrative Tools produce this error: "MMC cannot open
the file c:\windows\system32\ <name>.msc. This may be because the file does
not exist, is not an MMC console or was created by a later version of MMC.
This may be because you do not have suffiicient access rights to the file."
These tools are: Computer Management, Event Viewer, Services.

I can assure you that all of these were working perfectly before I did the
instructions in your previous post.

Surely there must be some common link between these failures?
